I'm a New Yawka so I've known of B & H forever. But I never visited the store until today. Yeah, apparently I'm just stupid. This place is incredible! I didn't realize it was this massive. It's the size a small airport. And I was assisted by the most earnest, efficient sales person in training, Tamir. Dude, was awesome. I did a lot of reading about the camcorder I want before I got here. But talking to him cleared up a lot of stuff and enabled me to zoom in (ya like that?!) on a decision I feel good about. They don't work on commission and I didn't even buy anything so it was just pure info. I will probably go back there to buy my camera. If you're looking for a video camera, go check out Tamir.
This place is INSANE. It could be considered heaven or hell, whichever way you look at it.
They have everything you could possibly need in the electronics department.
HUGE Telescopes-Check!
Cameras that are WAY too expensive-Check!
All the latest laptops-check!
And way more.
I could spend all day in here, but I was with the bf, so we had an agenda to get me a carrying case for my new DSLR camera, a carrying belt and a side strap. We picked everything out and left within a half hour.
I love the sales, cashier and pickup process here. This place is defintely a well-oiled machine.

The ultimate retailer for camera and photo equipment. They have a lot of choices for all the brand names and staff is somewhat attentive to your needs. Note: they close early on Fridays and all day Saturdays to observe the Sabbath as owners are shomrei Shabbat. It does get crowded at times.

Reliable on deliveries, good prices, best deals I've seen BUT ... every time you order, you get put on their catalog list, and you receive TWO GIGANTIC CATALOGS, the largest I've ever seen. We're talking a few trees-worth here. It's easy to unsubscribe, but the next time you order, you get TWO GIGANTIC CATALOGS again.
I have trouble supporting a business that sponsors this much waste.
Shopping at B&H is like playing a 1980's Nintendo game. Everything you seek is contained within this castle, but there are challenges and enemies along your way.
First, you must find the realm's mysterious 9th Ave location. Then, pass fanged security guards who steal your bags and purses. Into the endless maze, where nothing is where it should be! Battle crowds of wayward customers who block your progress! Decipher the multi-phased purchase process!
If you are up to these challenges, you will leave with whatever item you sought.
But player beware. Nobody has ever beaten the final boss: Saturday! If you attempt to enter the realm on a Saturday, you are assured defeat.

Everything about B&H photo screams 5 stars. Great location, extremely knowledgeable staff, and every photo and video item on the market at great discounts. I purchased my Canon EOS 20D here several years ago and I continue to return for all my accessories. These folks are shomrei Shabbat, so get there early on Fridays. Awesomeness next to Godliness.
You won't find the sales staff hassling you if you just walk in to browse or play with their toys. In fact, all of their items are available in floor models for you to screw around with. This is a 50,000 square ft endless warehouse of imaging gadgets that are sure to be in every photographer's wet dream.
I won't lie. What I love most about B&H is the conveyer system that trims and curves the ceiling of this place with Byzantine complexity. When your items are ready to be purchased, you're given a ticket to present to the cashier who receives your items via this system - obviously a theft prevention measure. You can even watch your items travel around the store as they await your tender, loving hands.

You know you've picked the right place to buy gadgets when you've spoken to the people on the floor. B&H knows their merchandise. I've been to B&H a lot and every time I visit, I've got a ton of questions. Why not? I'm spending almost $1,000 on a camera so I should be able to ask as many questions and compare as many things as possible. These guys know their stuff and you can't really go wrong with their prices. You can try... but, really. You'd be better off getting it here. The best part is how your purchases get to the pickup. It's always a treat to see your stuff moving around. They use the exact same system for airport baggages... to see is to believe, gents.
One star missing though because when I was buying ink for the company I used to work for, they had a tedious paperwork that I needed to fill out before I could use the company credit card. But that's another story.

All I wanted was a pair of headphones. I had to find a clerk to open a case for me. The clerk opened the case, and then looked up the order number for inventory. He directed me to wait in line at the small product counter. That guy, after looking up my headphones in his computer and printing out a form, told me to wait in line at the cashier. After paying the cashier told me to wait in line at the product pick up line. Then, even with the built in 15 minutes of waiting I'd done in a variety of lines, my headphones had not made it to the pick up counter.
Selection - 5 stars
Waiting in 3 lines to get them, and then waiting another 10 minutes to actually get them in hand - minus 2 stars
I wish they had a small product section for those of us who aren't there for the big stuff and were just planning on running in and out to pick something up.

I went in to buy a microphone. I was in and out in 10 minutes max. That included walking in, checking my bag, finding a rep to talk to, receive a pick up ticket, pay at the cashier, go to the pick up section, then pick up my bag and walk out the exit door. Impressive.

I walked into this place looking for a computer microphone. I walked into the mic section, which is fairly ridiculous, based on the fact that I was getting one to learn how to do podcasts. By the way, to this day, I have not done one yet, but this will demonstrate why B&H is a ridiculously cool place. So, the sales guy walks up, and asked me what I needed it for, and what my price range was. He then proceeded to give me four options, and told me the good and bad with each model of computer microphone. I narrowed it down based on his info, and decided to go with the "snowball", and that's when the fun began.
My order was whisked away somewhere to the mysterious depths of the B & H stock room, I was given a slip of paper, and told to walk into the charge only line. As I filed in, similar to that "Plinko" game on the Price is Right - I paid right away, and was shot over to the exit door, where my microphone had miraculously appeared from the ceiling pully system, bagged, and then handed to me. . .
I kid you not, I was out in five minutes. . .FLAT. It sort of took the fun out of "shopping", but I know that I if I ever need to buy a surround sound system, digital camera, and Ipod in under 10 minutes. This is the place!
By the way, they don't sell iphones - because Apple won't let them. They sell more ipods than the apple store. . . .
B & H stands for Badass & Handlin' Issh. . .

The one time I went to the store they were closed. With that being said, I've ordered quite few times online from them and their prices have saved me thousands compared to local retailers. Since i live in DC, I usually have make my purchases online. On one of our trips to NY, I finally said that I wanted to check out the store. As others have said, it is really the best audio and visual store ever. I still love to get their catalogs in the mail and page through it. Surely, it is often overrun with tourists, but if you are a serious photographer, you will find what you need at this store.

Awhile back, I remarked on how the place just felt overall unfriendly with the way the stuff was presented, but recently they did something amazing: they renovated.
A second floor was added and now they have a nice big section to display their used stuff and even let you get a feel for some of the equipment they have on sale, including half of the entire floor being devoted exclusively to all things with a shutter.
I admit, I was unimpressed, but now I am impressed. They really did a good job at making you feel like you can get what you need here. The conveyer belts are now sadly mostly hidden away, but they replaced it with a much more professional appearance that can now handle the storm of tourists and people trying to find something useful.
That said, my experience actually buying from them? Same estranging service where the folks I talked to didn't know what I was talking about half the time. Oh, they got some helpful people there too that really know what they're talking about, but ask for a lens adapter for an obscure mount and what do you get? Someone searching the website with you navigating them vocally. Bleagh.
You made a buyer out of me, B&H, but you still need to try a little harder before I give you unmitigated props.

By now you've read about their stock, prices, the good, the surly, the whirlygigs shipping your stuff all around still keeping it highly organized, and how it all together beats Adorama's ass.
But too many fail to mention the chewy sour apple candies stationed everywhere, so that the employees aren't subjected to your monster breath. There I was, looking for film on my lunch break, wherein I decided to double the red onions on my sammich, which I wolfed down on the way there. "THIS IS THE BEST CAMERA STORE IN THE WORLD!" according to my roommate and she has lived all over the world.
I finally made it to B&H with her after months of asking, "What's B&H? Is it like J&R?" I'm clueless about these things as there are still many adventures I have yet to experience in NYC. Well, walking through B&H didn't make me any less clueless. The place is confusing and the whole process is worse than going through airport security.
What's with all the lines? And why can't we just buy things here like a normal store? I was so confused so I just tagged along. B&H is not a grab and go type of place. Be prepared to hang around for at least 45 minutes if you plan to purchase something.
All the items are separated into departments so if you want multiple things from different departments, good luck. I hope you have patience. The good thing is that the employees are very knowledgeable (because the big wig companies send their representatives to educate the B&H employees on all their products) and very helpful and nice.
A lot of tourists shop here and those who need specialty items. This place has everything from $800 digital photo screens to underwater camera cases. The sky's the limit here and I hear the prices are pretty low. The sales guy told me B&H should change their name to "Better Than Best Buy."
I don't know if I'd come back to the physical store of B&H. It's a little too crazy for me. Thank goodness for online commerce. I doubt there are a 100 and one lines there.
Oh BTW, on this really hot day, B&H was giving away complimentary warm cokes and seltzer water. Candy too. They quenched my thirst for about 15 minutes. Nice!

Biggest photo (& video, audio, computer, portable entertainment,ect..) store in the world. That's not an opinion, its a fact. There are people who come (or shop online/phone) from all over the world. The prices are cheaper then the competition 80% of the time and the same price as the competition 18% of the time. Probably some of the most knowledgeable professionals in the industry (usually the non jewish guys have the most knowledge and real world advice). Paired with free classes and lectures this is a true NYC staple.
Word of the wise though, try to avoid fridays and sundays if you want a little more personal attention and a more relaxed shopping experience. Also make sure to check B&H's website for store hours because there are a number of Jewish Holidays the store is closed and there are few dissapointments bigger than making it out the the store to see it closed on a monday or something when you really wanted or needed to pick something up.

On February 8, 2008, I cried.
Polaroid had stopped making instant film; they were shutting down three factories and laying off 450 workers. Which, to me, didn't really hit until I realized that I would no longer be able to purchase Polaroid 600 film for my cameras.
I cried.
I then took a cab over to B & H and bought a pack of 600 film.
And three months later, I thought the world had run out of 600 film, when lo and behold, the film and media department at B & H saved the day.
My film supply was running low (I'm a hoarder) so I went over to B & H and asked one of the guys wearing funny little hats about Polaroid film. "You know," he said, "they don't make this anymore."
"I know," I replied, "that's why I'm buying ten packs."
He looked at me as if I were crazy, but followed it up with "You have one of the older cameras, huh? You guys always buy armloads of this stuff."
I just smiled. Oh, B & H, and your crazy checkout system. I kinda love you.

When I first bought my camera I was so unsure of it, the price was way high and I was tapping in to my savings to get the D200. With their fantastic customer service I had no doubts about it. After I placed my order they called me within a few hours to notify me about the purchase and confirm that I still wanted it. Of course I did! So when it finally did come I was like a toddler getting a puppy for Christmas. I have currently purchased more items through them and have found them to be one of the best places to order from. I have gotten mu company to use they for any digital products they may need as well along with a few strangers that had asked me about my camera. Thank B&H! You rock!

Blessed B&H, it is with your obese stock of things I think I need, that my available credit balance depletes like the air out of a drowning victim. I've never set foot in the store, but if you're a photographer it's pretty much either B&H or Adorama if you want to safely order goods online. I've done thousands of dollars in business with B&H and they are always my first choice. I only once had a hiccup with them trying to return an external hard drive that I didn't end up needing, but eventually they took it back and all was well with their perfect track record.

I've been here a couple of times, first to get a used lens for my Sony Alpha after researching lenses online for a while, and then to return it for a new one the next day after I brought it home only to be devastated after finding out that the specific model run of the lens doesn't work with newer Sony chipsets.
First, I have to say that their site is as informative as it should be. Anyone who does his or her homework prior to buying should have no hassle, once armed with a few good technical questions the staff is generally prepared to answer them in a way which helps YOU decide (as opposed to simply selling up, as many other places do).
The returns department was unexpectedly hassle-free. I brought the day-old used lens along with my camera and the receipt, the man behind the counter tested it out, and a few minutes later I had my receipt for store credit in my hand, ready to go OUT the door, through the cold January air (why is it always colder and windier on the West side?), and into the main establishment.
I had decent idea of what I wanted, so it didn't take me long to make a choice when seeing what was offered. Wasn't expecting the salesman to understand me quietly discussing competitors' prices with my cousin in arabic though... that was a rather embarrassing shock. Regardless, he did admit that some of the places in Brooklyn do advertise cheaper prices, but warned us that many of them are hardcore bait-and-switch dealers.
The store hours aren't a major issue for me as I have rather odd hours myself because of work, and anyone visiting their site prior to a holiday will be greeted by a huge warning that they'll be closed in observance of _______ (insert NameOfHoliday HERE).
Minus one star for the "shadow-around-the-store" treatment, but i guess that is kind of expected with a pair of dark-skinned blokes speaking Arabic in an Orthodox establishment. At least the "shadow treatment" guaranteed that there's always someone conveniently there to answer my questions if needed.

Above and beyond. I run a photo studio business and B&H has been taking good care of my professional needs for over 10 years. I've probably racked up over $100k in purchases from them. This has been a great long-term relationship and the fact that I've had no problems and more than a few pleasant surprises is very telling. I wish EVERY business were run as efficiently and professionally!
I've received every item ordered in time, in perfect condition, and adequately packaged. Not once have I received a partial kit (as many other dealers do), or an item that looked to have been used before.
The online process is simple and just works. The prices are usually the lowest industry standard. They carry everything in stock. The phone service is outstanding (though a short wait is always necessary).
Today I called to ask them what they could do about some rebates which had started on two Canon lenses I had recently purchased. I basically bought stuff which which is now cheaper. Without argument, they refunded the difference of $250, even though I've been shooting the lenses for a couple of weeks now. They didn't have to do that!
No restocking fees, no idiot salespeople -- so KITS, Best Buy, Wolf, etc can't compare in any way. I love well-run photo shops like the Looking Glass in Berkeley because THAT's the place where you can get general questions answered. But if you already know what you're doing, you need a no-nonsense online retailer that caters to pros needs, and B&H is the industry standard for that reason.
BITD when i was VJ and video artist this place was my home away from home.
a quick story... not long after schneerson died and the orthodox community was in a fervor i needed 2 new dv decks.
they wanted wanted to charge my 85$ a piece over what i wanted to pay. after a while of useless haggling i said to the salesman
"you know, when mosiach returns, you don't want to be caught with a lot of back inventory"
he looked at me for a silent second, started to laugh and gave me my price

You'll be overwhelmed, but you can find just about anything here. The sales people are much more helpful than they were four or five years ago. And they seems to have the system running smoothly. Once you've made the decision to buy, it's easy to get from sales floor to purchase to item pick up.

Great selection, good (possibly great) service, good prices. If it weren't for the New York attitude that I have gotten on ocassion then I would say service is great. The first time that I dealt with someone at B&H I was kind of pissed due to their tone and what seemed to be their attitude, but they came through. (I later came to realize this was fairly normal, though the attitude has seemed to improve since then)
Whenever I have had a problem, B&H has been responsive and extremely helpful. So helpful I prefer to buy most of my camera gear here even though they are on the opposite coast (and that's not all due to their prices as I am willing to pay more for better service).
I only have two complaints: 1. That they are closed early Friday and all day for Saturday. 2. All three times I have been to the store it's been packed! With service this good it's to be expected.
This a review for the online commerce.
As a Yelp newbie, I wanted to review only crap that was local, as well as places that I've actually visited in person. But I have to review B&H simply because I felt that perhaps my review would help someone thinking of making future online purchases at this retailer. And well I'm also bored.
B&H has been around for awhile, at their current location in NY. A mecca for photographers, and media professionals. I've never been to the store itself, but my recurring online purchases at this retailer, have made me decide that they deserved a kudos from me.
Tonights order, 10 boxes of Fuji FP-100C, a 10x loupe and 2 bulk rolls of Tri-X with a total shipping charge of $4.90 for 3-5 day UPS shipping.....clearly unbeatable.
FYI Adorama, and Freestyle Photo are also great places to do online business. But it seems that I get most of what I want from these guys. Not to mention I don't have to pay sales tax. Not that I don't mind paying it, but when our Governor decides to cut education funding , and eliminate jobs from an all ready struggling school system. It doesn't matter anymore. Next week my review on why buying doughnuts helps terrorism.
But really though, you have a choice in buying grey market vs US market items from B&H. This gives you a definite price leverage. No matter if you spend $3 or $3000, shipping is somewhat fixed based on time over quantity.
The only downside to buying from B&H online? They seem to go on vacation a lot. You can't buy on Friday afternoons and forget about buying on dates that sound like Channukah, Hanukkah, or Bahmitzvah etc. Now if I could only get my company to convert over from being Catholic.
Find me staring at this site if I'm not on Yelp.

B&H has the great prices, the little cute Jew hats, and the good equipment. But what it also has is lousy customer service and a horrible exchange process. If you ever want to return or exchange something, they send you over to the other side of the store where a large Jewish man chastises you and tries to find every part of missing plastic bag that came with your camera so you won't be eligible for a return. I don't expect them to be like Wal-Mart where you can return a giraffe turd in place of the answering machine you bought, but that's just bad business to intentionally try to not honor returns.

This is my favorite store in the world. I mostly purchase from them online because shopping there in person can be very stressful and hectic. Even with standard shipping, my orders usually arrive the next day after shipping (shipping to NJ).
They have an excellent selection of digital and film gear and the best prices around. All the staff have immense product knowledge in their respective sections, with the newer junior associates being equally helpful to their capacity and directing you on to the appropriate more knowledgeable staff when required.
This is certainly a place where you don't have to worry about asking any newbie or stupid questions as they totally welcome it.
I knew exactly what I wanted coming in here, but I always like a second opinion and once confirmed the checkout process is smooth as a baby's bottom.
You get a little print out, whilst your product meets you at the pickup point via conveyor belt. You get in the appropriate line (cash or plastic) and voila you go to the pickup line and you're ready to roll.

- knowledgeable staff; I prefer to go in knowing what I'd like to purchase but if you have no clue, tell someone what you're looking for as far as performance, size and price and they'll be sure to set you up with the closest fit
- can prove to be overwhelming; the size of the store alone is daunting without even taking selection into consideration
- think Santa's workshop, but replace the elves with hasidic Jews
- not open on Jewish holidays, any of them, accounts for some of the odd hours as well
- extensive selection at reasonable prices

Whoever called this place Santa's Jewish Worskshop is right on the money (and also brilliant). It's kind of an amazing thought to think of Santa Claus outsourcing his electronics division to the Orthodox Jews - SO, New York.
But I digress, I don't think we can ever truly understand how this place runs itself (The incomprehensible hours, the crazy multiple queues, the surly Hassidic staff, items rising from the ground in hidden elevators - it's all so overwhelming), but it seems to get the job done. I came in search of headphones and was advised away from the overpriced Bose to a pair that did serve me well until their untimely demise. The staff seems to actually know what they're talking about, and I would absolutely return for any electronic related advice - particularly about a camera.
Also to imagine the owners at the north pole pitching Santa on their operation: "You want a well run electronics division? Of course you do! Have we got the space for you..."
